Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can all lead to permanent physical changes in the body, particularly in the tummy and breasts. A mommy makeover is a combination of cosmetic surgical procedures to the breasts and abdomen designed to address the primary concerns of moms who want to feel more like themselves again after having children.

Getting back into shape after pregnancy can be hard. There are many diet plans and exercise routines designed to help you get everything about your body back to where it was before you had kids. However, sometimes this goal can be very hard to pull off. You may be able to make some progress, but there can be some stubborn belly fat that just doesn’t seem to go away. Your breasts will likely still sag and exercise will not restore your breasts to their original size. A mommy makeover can help you reach your goals when exercise and diet aren’t enough.

At the Northwest Center for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we’re here to help. Dr. Richard Rand is a Board Certified plastic surgeon who specializes in mommy makeovers for women in the greater Seattle area. Dr. Rand, together with his expert staff at the Northwest Center for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, has helped hundreds of women feel better about their bodies with cosmetic surgery.

If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of a mommy makeover, please don’t hesitate to contact our office in Bellevue today for more details.

What’s Involved in a Mommy Makeover?

Dr. Rand customizes each mommy makeover to address your particular concerns. Some women may have stretched-out abdominal skin and separated tummy muscles, while others have deflated or droopy breasts. You may have fine lines on your face that make you look tired. Dr. Rand may recommend one of several procedures as part of your mommy makeover, including:

Breast Augmentation

We offer breast augmentation with either silicone gel implants or saline implants in a variety of shapes and sizes. Every woman has different preferences and needs and every kind of implant is different. At your consult, Dr. Rand will discuss your goals and do an assessment to determine what type of breast implant is best for you.

Auto-Augmentation Breast Lift

The auto-augmentation breast lift is a specialized procedure Dr. Rand performs to help lift sagging breasts. Unlike a normal breast lift, which can result in smaller breasts due to removal of some tissue, the auto-augmentation breast lift works by using your own tissue to create an internal bra-like structure to lift the breasts while maintaining existing breast volume. You cannot feel this structure and it is not noticeable in any external way.

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks help reduce fat and tighten the abdomen. Ideal candidates are within 30 pounds of the ideal weight. Tummy tucks work by creating an incision across the hips and removing extra tissue and fat to create a tighter abdomen. The mini tummy tuck is a similar procedure that is less invasive for patients within 10% of their ideal body weight. Tummy tucks have the additional benefit of tightening and strengthening the abdominal muscles, which can also help with back pain and other issues. A tummy tuck may be able to eliminate stretch marks on the belly as well.

Nonsurgical med spa treatments like BOTOX® and dermal fillers have become popular additions to mommy makeovers as some women find they help improve their appearance. These are non-surgical procedures that can help reduce facial fine lines and wrinkles.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

Our Certified Medical Assistant/Licensed Master Aesthetician is one of the most skilled BOTOX® injectors in the greater Seattle area. BOTOX® can help you get rid of frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. Time and stress can carve these lines into your face and BOTOX® will help you look refreshed and rejuvenated every day.

Injectable Fillers

We offer a variety of injectable fillers that can help manage skin folds around the nose and mouth.. These dermal fillers can be used to treat wrinkles around the mouth, depressed scars, and hollow cheeks. We offer a wide range of options for dermal fillers. Every treatment is different and every patient has different needs. If dermal fillers seem right for you during your consult, Dr. Rand will help you to determine which kind is the best for you and your skin.

Who Can Benefit from a Mommy Makeover?

The best mommy makeover candidates are:

  • Within 10-20 pounds of their ideal weight.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Are in general good health.
  • Not undergoing or about to undergo serious weight loss or weight gain.

You will also undergo a few medical tests to make sure that it is safe for you to undergo surgery. This will all be a part of your medical evaluation if you go forward with the cosmetic surgery process.

The best mommy makeover results are seen in women who are finished having children, since future pregnancies could compromise your surgical results. These procedures can help you feel better and more fit. A mommy makeover is a great chance to get back into an active lifestyle after you’ve finished having children.

How a Mommy Makeover Is Performed

The specific steps that Dr. Rand takes during surgery will vary depending on which procedures are included as part of your mommy makeover. Dr. Rand will discuss all your options with you during your consultation, as well as go into greater detail about what to expect during surgery and recovery. Mommy Makeover FAQs

How long is the recovery from a mommy makeover?

Depending on the mommy makeover procedures you select, full recovery can take between 4 to 6 months. But you’ll be back in the swing of things well before then. Most women find they can return to work in 2 weeks and resume more intense activities within 10 to 12 weeks. As you go forward with your cosmetic surgery, we will provide you with a timeline for your recovery. We have a detailed recovery procedure designed to produce excellent results.

Some mommy makeover procedures will involve inserting drains. These will be removed a few days following surgery. For drains, patients cannot shower or take baths and must take sponge baths. It’s also important not to strain sutures and stitches while they are in. Preparation will help make this difficult portion of the recovery process much better.

What kind of results can I expect from a mommy makeover?

Our mommy makeovers are designed to help you get back to the body you had before pregnancy. It’s important to keep your expectations realistic. By understanding how the procedures work, you can gain a better understanding of what the final result will be. Get a mommy makeover to help you feel better about yourself, not because anyone else is pressuring you or because you want to impress anyone else.

Do I need to do anything in preparation for my mommy makeover?

The most important preparation you can make for your mommy makeover is to be in general good health. If you smoke, stop smoking for at least 6 weeks prior to surgery and at least 6 weeks after surgery. You may need to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners. You should also avoid taking aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs since they can increase bleeding during surgery.

It’s important to clear out your calendar the day of surgery and for 2 weeks after so you can recover properly. Make sure that you plan to have someone to drive you to and from surgery, as well as take care of you for several days after. Prepare to find it difficult to move around and do normal activities (such as cooking, driving, etc.) for a few days. Be sure to prepare to deal with any restrictions due to stitches and drains, such as not being able to shower for a few days. Dr. Rand and his team will give you a list of considerations before your surgery.

How long will it take to see the results of my mommy makeover?

Initially, you will have swelling and stitches after you complete surgery. The stitches (and, in the case of tummy tucks, drains) are removed within a week after surgery. Swelling will continue to go down throughout your recovery period. Following the post-operative instructions we provide will help you to see the results of your mommy makeover sooner.

Will I have any scars?

All cosmetic surgery results in surgical scars. These scars will be puffy and pink following surgeries and will start to flatten and fade over the course of the next year or so. We will provide scar-reduction treatment starting about a week after your surgery.

Tummy tucks result in a scar across the hips. Dr. Rand will evaluate your body type and clothing preferences to ensure that this scar is as inconspicuous as possible. Mini tummy tucks result in a smaller scar between the hips. There will also be scars from any breast surgery, though where these are located will depend on the kind of incision that is made.

Are there any potential side effects?

Like with any surgery, there will be some after-effects from your mommy makeover surgery. You can expect some swelling. This can make it seem like the surgery has gone wrong, but it is very normal and will go down over the course of your recovery period. If you have any allergies, you need to discuss those with Dr. Rand during your consult.

Mommy makeover surgery does require patients to go under general anesthesia. We ensure that all of our patients have a board-certified anesthesiologist with them before, during, and after surgery to monitor vitals. You will get a chance to speak with the anesthesiologist prior to surgery so you can understand what to expect.

There are possible complications for a mommy makeover, just like any other surgery. These may include bleeding, infection, poor healing of incisions, hematoma, and seroma. Other rare but possible complications may occur as well. Your safety is very important to us. We do everything we can to minimize complications and our facility is held to the highest health and safety standards.

How long will the results last?

If you wait to have a mommy makeover until after you have children, and maintain a healthy weight with regular exercise, you can expect the results to last a long time. Proper recovery is important to this, especially ensuring you wear a surgical bra for the prescribed length of time if you have a breast surgery as part of your mommy makeover. Dramatic weight gain or weight loss can also cause issues with your mommy makeover results. Cosmetic surgery is not an exact science and it’s important to keep expectations realistic and make good decisions that contribute to your ongoing health and fitness.

A mommy makeover can leave you feeling like a whole new you. Pregnancy can be hard on the body. Working out and dieting may not be enough to get you back to the body you had before. Cosmetic surgery can be the step you need to get the look you want.
