Liposuction of the chin or neck is intended to restore the youthful, angular qualities of the lower face. Even with regular diet and exercise, many people start to see fat accumulate below their chin during their 20s. If this fat is persistent for you, a liposuction procedure may remove the problem.
Who should consider neck liposuction?
If you are unhappy about the appearance of your neck, chances are that you are a candidate for one of two procedures: liposuction or a neck lift.
- Candidates for neck liposuction are typically younger with great skin elasticity and muscle tone. Liposuction will not tighten the muscles or skin; it simply removes fat and the skin shrinks on its own.
- Candidates for a neck lift have extra skin, mediocre skin elasticity, loose muscles, and loss of youthful angularity.
Good candidates for liposuction are also heathy non-smokers at a stable body weight, with realistic expectations about cosmetic surgery.
How Liposuction of the Neck and Chin is Performed
Small incisions can be placed in the middle of the neck area or near the ears, depending on where the fat is located. These incisions are very inconspicuous after surgery. A small tube called a cannula is used to dislodge the fat and remove it with suction.

After Liposuction of the Neck: What to Expect
Swelling, bruising, and changes in skin sensation are normal during recovery. It will take time for these effects to subside, at which time you will be able to evaluate your results. Dr. Rand provides a special “chin strap” compression garment that must be worn night and day for about one week to reduce swelling and expedite recovery.
How long do the results of liposuction last?
Just like any cosmetic procedure, the aging process continues after surgery. In places where fat cells have been removed, the tendency for fat to accumulate is reduced, but it can happen if you do not lead a healthy lifestyle.
