Chin Surgery

Chin surgery can reshape the chin to add or reduce chin projection. This surgery is often called mentoplasty, genioplasty or chin augmentation. The most common reason for chin surgery is to correct abnormal smallness of the chin, a condition known as microgenia.

When Chin Surgery Should Be Performed

Chin surgery may be right for you if you are bothered by an aesthetic imbalance of your facial features caused by a weak chin. Your jaw should be fully developed before considering this procedure. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, you should be a healthy, non-smoker who is capable of understanding the risks and benefits involved. Notify Dr. Rand if you have any medical problems related to the mouth.

What is a chin implant?

Chin implants are made of silicone rubber, also known as silastic. They come in different shapes and sizes to match your anatomy. A plastic surgeon can help you choose an implant that will provide the cosmetic result you desire.

During surgery, the chin implant is placed directly on the chin bone so it is covered by tissue and muscle. Incisions can be done inside or outside the mouth. To avoid exposure to bacteria in the mouth, Dr. Rand prefers to use a tiny external incision below the mandibular crease.

Will the chin implant move?

The surgical placement involves creation of a pocket surrounding the implant. As long as this is done correctly, the implant will not move and there is no need to fixate it with screws.

What is a sliding genioplasty?

A related but slightly more complex procedure is sliding genioplasty, which moves the lower front portion of the jaw (or chin bone) forward and reduces its height.

What to Expect After Chin Implant Surgery

The chin may be taped after surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. External sutures in the skin will be removed in about 1 week. Your ability to move your mouth and lips may be diminished temporarily during recovery from chin surgery. Once the healing is complete, the swelling subsides and the sutures are removed, you will see the skin drape nicely over the implant (unless it is large, you will not feel it) and the cosmetic improvements will be noticeable.
