A chemical peel is a specially formulated skin treatment designed to remove blemishes, age spots, and other imperfections, giving each patient improved skin texture and complexion. Plastic surgeons or aestheticians offer many different chemical peel formulas, often customizing them based on a particular patient’s needs. Popular formulas include the following:
- Glycolic acid
- Alpha-Hydroxy Acid
- Salicylic acid
- Trichloarecetic Acid
The peels offered at our Bellevue plastic surgery center are considered light chemical peels, meaning they are gentle and, compared to deep chemical peels like phenol, carry a lower risk of side effects. Ask the doctor about the difference between our light peel and the deep chemical peels being offered by surgeons today.
Who should consider a chemical peel?
If your skin is dull, rough or irregular on areas like your face, chest and neck, then a chemical peel may be the right treatment for you. The peel improves your skin texture and complexion after aging or prolonged sun exposure, treating common conditions like age spots, sun spots, mild acne scars, freckles, fine wrinkles, uneven skin texture, and dull complexion.
A chemical peel works best on persons with fair, thin skin and fine wrinkles.
The Chemical Peel Procedure: What to Expect
The first step involves choosing a formula. Dr. Rand can recommend the right peel formula or, if the peel is not a good choice, one of our other professional skin treatments. After a thorough cleansing of the skin, the formula is applied smoothly and evenly across the skin of the face, neck or chest, carefully feathering it near the hair. It may sting somewhat during this application process.
After Your Chemical Peel
During the days that follow your chemical peel, you may experience some temporary flaking or scaling, redness and dryness of the skin. These conditions should subside as healing takes place. Ask Dr. Rand for specific instructions about applying makeup and/or sunscreen during recovery from your chemical peel.
